winter wedding style

I am a part time milliner and colour and image consultant with an interest in all things fashion related.

Dressing for a winter wedding can be stressful as you have to take the cold weather into consideration and try and coordinate outer wear with your ensemble. However it can also be a wonderful time for a celebration with the lovely contrasting colours in nature and decorations, warm open fires as well as the fabulous festive atmosphere in the lead up and during Christmas.

Have you been invited to a winter wedding this year? Do you find it easier to dress for a summer wedding when you have less to coordinate?

You may feel more restricted with styles and colour, especially if you are someone who likes floral prints and summery hues. There are ways to get around this though, such as choosing to have the background of your print in a darker colour or you could also opt for a paisley print or mix textures.

There are some fabulous chanel style tweeds in pastel shades available this year also. Tulle skirts are very much in vogue this year and are lovely worn with pastel tweed jackets in a matching colour.

Velvet

Velvet is always a great option for a winter occasion. It is rich and luxurious and flattering to wear. You can choose from some elegant midi dresses or opulent coloured jumpsuits. It is versatile and comfortable and can be worn again for a party night or evening dining. I love a velvet trouser suit and rich beaded accessories look wonderful with this luxe fabric. Satin and Sequins

Subtle shimmer and metallics to suit your skin tones can really get you in a party mood. Christmas and New Year are all about sparkle but it is important not to overdo it. Balance the look with a wool coat or fur wrap and keep the colour rich rather than pale so as not to compete with the bride. Accessories need to be kept very simple for this look. Bold Coloured Crepes and Contrasting Colours

The heavier crepe fabric suitable for winter wedding style dresses and coordinates has its’ advantages in that it is more flattering to wear, hiding the lumps and bumps. Another advantage to a winter wedding is having long sleeved dresses especially if you are conscious of your arms. You can also avoid fake tan by wearing some of the lovely sheer tights available (always carry a spare pair). Rich bold jewel colours are stunning in these heavier fabrics. A monochromatic look is always chic or choose contrasting colours in a complimentary tone. Burgundy and gold, navy and silver, black and white, teal and copper…..to name just a few. The Knitted Dress

The knitted dress is this season’s new obsession. I personally am loving that this trend has returned , as they flow comfortably with your body while still creating that chic and understated elegant look.  Of course you can re-wear your dress again and again with boots and a biker jacket or coat. Accessorise with an oversized collar or chain belt or add a pop of colour with your shoes.Shop @rixo @hayleymenzies.com

The Little Black Dress

The little black dress is always an option and a sustainable option at that, for cost per wear in your wardrobe. It is a perfect canvas for all the wonderful accessories on offer. Wear with a beautiful pearl statement neckpiece to brighten up your face if you feel black is a little harsh on you. If you have a little black dress in your wardrobe you will always be ready for that winter wedding or unexpected occasion. @reiss.com @hobbs.com @self-portrait-studio.com @whistles.com

The Jumpsuit

If you feel more comfortable in trousers than skirts/dresses, a jumpsuit is a great choice. Team it with metallic sandals and statement earrings and immediately look glamorous and edgy. @rockthejumpsuit.com @reiss.com @nadinemerabi.com

Hats and Accessories

Felt, velvet, beaded and leather hats/headpieces are good for this time of year. It is important to consider the whole outfit when choosing a hat. If your outfit is simple you can be more dramatic with the hat but if the outfit is fussy be sure to keep your hat simple. Rental Options

Renting your outfit is another choice that is very popular nowadays especially if you are being more conscious of your purchases and feel you get very few opportunities to wear occasion wear .
